SSU Holds Sports Banquet

The Savannah State athletics department held their annual sports banquet on April 13 in Tiger Arena. The theme of the banquet was “The Tiger Espys MVP Awards”. Earning Most Valuable Player awards in their sport were: Kaneisha Hamilton (women’s volleyball), Sandra Kirstjansdottir (women’s tennis), Madison Hedderly (softball), Ilene Martin (cheerleader), Aleah Hordges (women’s cross country), Ruben Isreal-McBee (men’s cross country), Amara Jones (women’s track-sprinter), Eric Plump (men’s track-sprinter), Sharonda Redfield and Amber Hughes (women’s track-field events), Shawn Sovenir (men’s track-field events), Dominique Givance (women’s track-distance), Tyrone McCoy (men’s track-distance), Ezinne Kalu (women’s basketball), Jovonni Shuler (men’s basketball), Joseph McCrary III (baseball), Sheldon Barnes (footballoffense) and Vince Cochran (football-defense).

Stetson Sweeps Tiger Baseball Team

Stetson swept a three-game series from Savannah State over the weekend in DeLand, Florida. The Hatters won 17-4 on April 15 and 5-3 on April 16. Stetson, ranked 21st in the nation, pulled out a 10-5 win on April 17 to drop the Tigers (20-19). Emory Barkley had three hits for SSU on Friday, McCrary had three hits on Saturday and hit a home run on Sunday.

SSU Football Holds Orange & Blue Game

The Savannah State football team held their annual Orange and Blue scrimmage at the practice field on April 14. The defense was led by Chris Asbury who returned one of his two interceptions for a touchdown and former Jenkins High standout Terrance Williams who had two sacks. Justin Babb scored on a short run for the offense while fellow running back Sheldon Barnes caught a scoring pass. Derek Williams kicked a field goal for the special teams. While head coach Steve Davenport was pleased with the defense he said the offense still has a long way to go.

Shuler Makes Basketball All- Independent Team

Savannah State senior swingman Jovonni Shuler has been named to the Division I men’s basketball All-Independent Team for the 2010-11 season. The 6-4 Lake Placid, Florida native averaged 18.1 points and 5.1 rebounds per game this season.

Southern Fires AD

Southern University Chancellor Kofi Lomotey fired Athletic Director Greg LaFleur on April 6. LaFleur’s dismissal comes after his arrest for allegedly soliciting a prostitute in Houston, Texas. “This decision was reached after consultation with campus and system administrators. We think the decision is in the best interest of Southern University,” Lomotey said. “Given the circumstances, I think it would be difficult for the university to move forward with Mr. LaFleur as the head of the athletic program,” he added.
