SSU Hires Volleyball Coach

Schannon Gamble has been hired as the new head volleyball coach at Savannah State. Gamble comes to SSU from Lincoln-Pa. where she served as head volleyball coach and academic coordinator. Gamble replaces Malik Jones who resigned in December. While at Lincoln, Gamble had a four-year record of 27- 90 which includes a 5-25 mark in 2010, according to the Lincoln website. From 1999-2005, she was an assistant coach at North Carolina Central, her alma mater.

SSU Track Wins Three At Palmetto Classic

Savannah State brought home three first place finishes at the Palmetto Classic hosted by The Citadel and College of Charleston in Mt. Pleasant, SC on March 12. Amara Jones won the women’s 400m, Chaz Price won the men’s 400m and Felton Chinn won the men’s 400m hurdles. SSU finished second in seven events and placed third in two events. Savannah State finished the day with 29 top ten finishes.

Big Run Leads Tigers Past NCCU

Savannah State broke open a close game with a 21-8 run and went on to defeat North Carolina Central 64-50 in Winston-Salem, NC on March 12. The Tigers led 30- 29 early in the second half but their big run gave them a 51-37 lead with 9:54 left. NCCU got as close as nine points with 5:21 remaining but five unanswered points by SSU gave the Tigers breathing room. Preston Blackmon led SSU with 16 points. Cedric Smith came off the bench to score 14 and Jovonni Shuler addeends the season 12-18 and won 10 of their last 11 games after starting the season 1-13.

Shaw Wins CIAA Tournament

The Shaw Lady Bears captured the 2011 CIAA women’s basketball tournament with a 62-56 win over Johnson C. Smith on March 5 in Charlotte, NC. The victory gave the Bears a invite to the Division II national tournament where they beat top seeded Edinboro 72-51 on March 11 and fifth seeded California-Pa. 70-63 on March 13. Shaw (23-11) advances to the Sweet 16, where they were to play CIAA rival Johnson C. Smith on March 14. Jacques Curtis is the Shaw head coach and Anita Griffin is one of his assistants. Both are Savannah natives. Curtis attended Benedictine and Savannah State while Griffin went to Beach and Armstrong Atlantic.
