It’s not easy to start a conversation about suicide, but it’s worth it: speaking openly about suicide is one of the most effective ways to prevent it. That’s why, this September, during National Suicide Prevention Month, we want to speak openly about suicide, it’s impact on our community, and talk about how we can prevent work together to suicide.
In Georgia, suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death in ages 25-34 and the 4th leading cause for ages 35-54. In Chatham County in 2016, 47 individuals died by suicide and over 1,175 attempted suicide. Last year, the youngest person to suicide was only 6 years old.
Prevent Suicide Today is a suicide prevention program managed by Chatham County Safety Net Planning Council in partnership with Gateway Community Service board and 20+ community partners. The program offers Suicide- TALK and Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) ASIST workshops throughout Chatham County. This fall 2018, Prevent Suicide Today has partnered with the Savannah-Chatham County Public School System to train all full-time employees with Suicide TALK. ASIST Workshops.
