Rev. Dr. George A. Moore Jr. and the St. Philip Monumental AME family Cordially invite you to our annual Family and Friends Day Celebration Sunday February 9, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. This year’s theme will be”Spiritual Growth through Families” with guest speaker State Representative Calvin Smyre, of Columbus, Georgia. Smyre is a business executive, state legislator, community and national leader who is also Executive Vice President, Corporate External Affairs, Synovus and President of the Synovus Foundation.

He also serves on the company’s eight member Corporate Executive Group. Synovus (NYSE:”SNV”) is a diversified financial services holding company with over $32 billion in assets based in Columbus, Georgia.

Representative Smyre was elected to the Georgia House of Representatives in 1974 as its youngest member at 26 years of age. As a 33 year legislative veteran and one of the “Deans,” he serves on the most important panels of the House. In the state’s budgetary process he serves on the Appropriations Committee, which is responsible for dividing up the $20 billion state budget. He is also a member of the powerful calendar-setting Rules Committee as well as Chairman of the House Minority Caucus. He has served as Chairman of the House Rules Committee and University System of Georgia Committee. Representative Smyre authored the legislation making Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr’s birthday and state holiday. In an historic move Governor Roy Barnes named Rep. Smyre Chairman of the Democratic Party of Georgia in September 2001 thus becoming the first African American to chair the State Party and he has been selected as a delegate to attend the past seven Democratic National Conventions.

Representative Smyre is also an active and dedicated member of Ward Chapel African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church in Columbus, Georgia under the pastorate of The Reverend Conitras Houston-Moore.
