Preparation is Key to Home Fire Safety

One of the biggest investments that you can make in your lifetime is purchasing a home. That is why it is important to prepare for fire prevention in your home. Agent Gregg Miller of Country Financial is teaming up with the Georgia Arson Control Board to remind the citizens of Chatham County about the importance of having smoke detectors and proper safety equipment in your home as well as emergency escape plans in case of fires. A fire doubles in size every minute. It is also important to report arson. If you have information that leads to the arrest and conviction of an arsonist, the Georgia Arson Control Board offers a reward up to $10,000. Call the Arson Hotline at 1-800-282- 5804 and help fight arson.

According to Miller, “In the event of a fire, remember that every second counts and you and your family must always be prepared. A fire doubles in size every minute.” The following tips are also offered to help protect your family and home from fire:

A properly installed and maintained smoke alarm is the only thing in your home that can alert you and your family to a fire 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The United States Fire Administration (USFA) recommends that every residence and place where people sleep be equipped with both ionization AND photoelectric smoke alarms.

The USFA recommends installing smoke alarms both inside and outside of sleeping areas.

GAC, Georgia Department of Insurance and Safety Fire, and state/local law enforcement agencies, established an ARSON HOTLINE 1-800-282-5804.
