Prayer Calms Storms

“Confess your trespasses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much. Elijah was a man with a nature like ours, and he prayed earnestly that it would not rain; and it did not rain on the land for three years and six months. And he prayed again, and the heaven gave rain, and the earth produced its fruit,” (James 5:16-18).

The prayer of the believer who has faith in Christ and His ability is more powerful than we realize many times. God, through James, states that “the effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails or prevails much.” He then compares our nature to that of the prophet Elijah concerning prayer. God says, “Elijah was a man with a nature like ours.” This means he was just an ordinary man like you and I. It was his faith in a supernatural, all powerful God, that gave Him the ability to perform these great signs. This means our prayers to God, in Jesus name, have the same potential power as those of Elijah.

Our prayers, when offered up in faith, actually have more power than that of Elijah’s because we are living under a new and better covenant than he lived under. The Holy Spirit came on people under the old covenant and gave them the grace to perform miracles. Under the new covenant, the Holy Spirit doesn’t just come upon us but lives on the inside of us and gives us the grace to do all things through Christ. If our prayers can produce the same or even greater results than that of Elijah, then I think it is important for us to look at how Elijah prayed and what his prayer of faith produced for him.

“And Elijah the Tishbite, of the inhabitants of Gilead, said to Ahab, “As the LORD God of Israel lives, before whom I stand, there shall not be dew nor rain these years, except at my word,”” (I Kings 17:1 NKJV).

Elijah’s declaration caused the heavens to close up and rain did not fall on the ground over his region for three and a half years. This means, if Elijah could manipulate the atmospheric elements of the earth through prayer than we can to. God has given His church His authority. We are God’s representatives on the earth. When we make declarations on God’s behalf it then becomes His responsibility to bring those declarations to pass. Our responsibility is to speak out God’s will. It is God’s responsibility to bring forth the results. Nothing happens on the earth until man talks. Our agreement with God, through our confessions, gives God access to accomplish His plan for us and through us on the earth. This is why Jesus taught us to pray, “your kingdom come your will be done in earth, as it is in heaven,” (Matthew 6:10).

God has given you His authority over every spiritual, emotional, or even physical storms that may come your way in life. Do not retreat or surrender to these storms. Do not allow fear to have any place in your life. Arise in the authority of Christ and command those storms to cease. Command those storms to be at peace. When you do, you will experience the delivering power of the hand of God. Allow me to leave you with this question. If God is for you, “which He is,” then who can be against you?! Blessings,
