North Georgia Artist Unveils New Technique in First Savannah Show

Opening On June 22 To Feature Danette Sperry’s Relief Paintings

Roots Up Gallery is pleased to announce the exhibition of all-new relief paintings by artist Danette Sperry. “Harmony/The Gentle Soul of Danette Sperry” will run from June 22 until July 18 at the gallery with an opening reception with the artist on Thursday, June 22, from 5 pm – 8 pm.

“ Harmony/The Gentle Soul of Danette Sperry ” will be the selftaught artist’s first solo exhibition in Savannah. Addressing mythical, natural, interpersonal and domestic scenes, the show will feature paintings such as the fairytale-like tableau “Forest Angel”; “Angel of Happiness,” a symbolic, fulllength portrait; and “Grizzly Bear,” a large, textural rendering of a grizzly by a stream. Roots Up Gallery will also showcase a number of Ms. Sperry’s larger formats that have enabled the artist to achieve new levels of detail.

Ms. Sperry’s three-dimensional work has been represented at Roots Up Gallery since 2015. With this exhibition, the artist will unveil her innovative “2-D” relief paintings for the first time. Using a process that combines shallow, sculpted surface detail and richly layered striations of paint, Ms. Sperry produces a unique relief effect—thoroughly contemporary rather than classical. Each work also features its own one-of-a-kind frame, hand-built by the artist. An outsider artist for more than 20 years, Ms. Sperry is based in Maysville, Georgia. A much-loved addition to the folk art canon, the artist’s whimsical, evocative work is in the collections of art patrons across the country.

“ Harmony/ The Gentle Soul of Danette Sperry” will be exhibited from June 22 until July 18 at Roots Up Gallery at 6 East Liberty Street. The artist will be in attendance and available to discuss her new work at the shows.
