National civil rights and personal injury attorney Ben Crump of Ben Crump Law, PLLC has been retained by the family of Stephon Clark, an unarmed 22-year-old black man who was shot dead in his grandmother’s yard by Sacramento police on Sunday. Officers who were responding to a 911 call about a man tampering with vehicles saw and approached Clark, then shot 20 times.
In a statement from Attorney Ben Crump about the shooting, he calls for full transparency and answers for the grieving family.
“The shooting death of Stephon Clark is an all-too-common tragedy. It is yet another troubling example of a young, unarmed black man being shot by police under highly questionable circumstances. From what we have seen so far, Sacramento law enforcement’s actions – both before and after the shooting – have raised more questions than provided answers. All of us who are committed to social justice are demanding full transparency and answers as to how these tragic events unfolded.”
The attorney also recalled the words of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., whose assassination was 50 years ago on April 4, 1968, saying: “It is no longer a choice between violence and nonviolence in this world; it’s nonviolence or nonexistence.”
