This year’s Roll of Honor recipients were: City of Savannah Alderman Emeritus Clifton Jones and Mr. Peter Doliber, ceo/executive director of the May Street YMCA. These men were recognized for their service to the community in the field of civic engagement. Carver State Bank was honored for its 85 years of service as a financial service leader for all sectors of the Savannah community. In addition, the Executive Board paid special tribute to several fallen NAACP “starlet supporters” who annually supported this event: Mrs. Janie R. Toomer, Mrs. Frenchye Bynes, Mr. J. B. Clemmons and Mr. John Saxon (Picciolo) Pierce. Their presence in the audience will be solely missed.

The Freedom Awards Banquet was originally established by Mr. & Mrs. J. B. (Mozelle) Clemmons in 1980. From its inception, this event continues to publicly acknowledge citizens and organizations for their service to humanity and devotion to the cause of human freedom.

Locally, the branch is consistently involved in voter registration, presentation of political forums, being the voice against injustice and racism and assisting community members with legal problems and sensitive issues.
