Music Artist Lalah Hathaway will perform at Lucas Theatre for the Arts on Thursday, September 29, 2016 at 8p.m. As the daughter of 1970s soul star Donny Hathaway, Lalah Hathaway had some big shoes to fill, and she proved herself to be up to the task with her 1990 debut album, which produced a string of hits including “Heaven.
During an interview with The Savannah Tribune, Lalah revealed that music has been so much a part of her regular life. She has been a student of art, she is a child and grandchild of musicians. Lalah attended Chicago’s Performing Arts High School, then graduated to the famed Berklee School of Music in Boston. At the age of 21, she signed with Virgin Records and made a good impression with her debut recording, “Lalah Hathaway”, in 1990.
Lalah not only displayed poise, confidence, and good technique, but was also versatile enough to do more than just light urban contemporary ballads. Her stage shows included jazz, pre-rock pop, and even gospel, and later appeared on BET doing jazz and fusion. When asked about living in the shadows of her father Donny, Lalah replied “That’s who I am. I am Donny Hathaway’s daughter. It’s OK, it’s all right to call me that.
Just in the same way I am known as Eulaulah Hathaway’s daughter. I am Kenya Hathaway’s sister. That’s who I am.” Lalah loves music. She believes that soul music tells a story of Black Americans in our country and she is happy to be a part of that as a storyteller. She looks forward to performing in Savannah to kick off her tour.
Tickets are on sale at the Savannah Civic Center Box Office.
