MUMC Partners with Local School to Launch New Careers

On January 20, three high school students from Woodville Tompkins Technical and Career Institute (WTTCI) will begin working as patient care technicians at Memorial University Medical Center (MUMC). Their new career opportunity is the result of a school-business partnership between MUMC and WTTCI, one of the newest high schools in Savannah. Woodville Tompkins makes it possible for students to attend their home high school while also gaining hands-on career experience.

Courtney Williams, Tiffany Jeater, and Angelica Williams are seniors at Groves High School. They are also enrolled in a nursing pathway program at WTTCI. They each earned their certification as a nursing assistant, which allowed them to interview for patient care tech positions at MUMC. The students will work closely with nurses, interact with patients and family members, and learn how to provide holistic care.

“I want to go into the nursing field and this gives me the hands-on experience before I go to college,” said Courtney Williams.

Jody Buelterman, manager of MUMC’s Talent Acquisition Center, said the programs offered at WTTCI are exceptional.

“We look forward to building a strong relationship with the school to secure a pipeline of compassionate healthcare providers for Memorial and our community,” said Buelterman.

Derrick Muhammad, principal of WTTCI, calls the partnership with MUMC, “workforce development at its finest.”

Memorial University Medical Center (MUMC) is a two-state healthcare organization serving a 35-county area in southeast Georgia and southern South Carolina.
