Memorial’s Whipple Named Georgia’s 2009 Young Surgeon of the Year

Memorial University Medical Center (MUMC) physician Oliver C. Whipple, M.D., has been awarded the 2009 Young Surgeon of the Year Award by the Georgia Chapter of the American College of Surgeons. Whipple was chosen from among surgeons 45 years old and younger in the state of Georgia.

Whipple is certified by the American Board of Surgery and is a member of the American College of Surgeons. He is specially trained to perform the Rouxen Y gastric bypass procedure and the adjustable gastric band laparoscopically. After earning his undergraduate degree at the University of Georgia, he attended medical school at Mercer University School of Medicine in Macon.

Whipple has earned numerous teaching awards and presented many lectures about surgery.

The American College of Surgeons is a scientific and educational association of surgeons that was founded in 1913 to improve the quality of care for the surgical patient by setting high standards for surgical education and practice.

The Georgia Chapter of the American College of Surgeons advocates for its members and the patients they serve, encourages the highest standards of ethical surgical practice in the state of Georgia, and provides educational opportunities for its members as well as surgery residents and medical students.
