Memorial Unveils Renovations at Children’s Hospital

The Children’s Hospital at Memorial University Medical Center (MUMC) held a ribbon-cutting ceremony to show off renovations within the facility, including the Ronald McDonald family room. The new improvements include: · Moving the pediatric special care unit to consolidate all pediatric general care areas on a single floor within MUMC. · Significant renovations in the pediatric intensive care unit, including the addition of six new intermediate care beds. · Upgrades to The Children’s Hospital Outpatient Center, including a new infusion room called “Matthew’s Place.” The room provides privacy and comfort for patients who require all-day infusion treatments. Three new exams rooms were also added and the nurses’ station was relocated to improve patient flow. · The new Ronald Mc- Donald Family Room is a place where family members can take a break, eat, watch TV, rest, take a shower, and still be close to their child. For 25 years, Memorial has been home to the Ronald McDonald House, a place where out-of-town families can stay while their child receives treatment. The Ronald McDonald House is located across from Memorial’s main entrance, while the family room is inside the hospital. “These upgrades are important because we are the only children’s hospital in the region. We know that sick and injured children do better in a children’s hospital, cared for by pediatricians and pediatric subspecialists,” said Maggie Gill, president and CEO of Memorial Health. “Last year, The Children’s Hospital at MUMC cared for more than 60,000 children and adolescents from more than 120 counties. Of these, 330 were neonates transported to our Level III neonatal intensive care nursery, many of them brought here by our specially trained neonatal transport team.”

The total cost for the project was $2.7 million, and it was paid for entirely through philanthropy. Funds were provided by Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals, The One Hundred, and the Next Generation – organizations dedicated solely to supporting The Children’s Hospital – as well as events such as the John A. (Jack) Kolbush Memorial Fund, the Lollipop Fund, the Kids Cash Classic golf tournament, and Patrick’s Ride. The Children’s Hospital at MUMC opened more than two decades ago so that the children in southeast Georgia and southern South Carolina could be treated close to home.

Today, approximately 80 pediatricians and pediatric subspecialists practice at the 100-bed children’s hospital. The Children’s Hospital offers more than 20 pediatric subspecialties, including pediatric cardiology, pediatric hematology/oncology, pediatric neurology, pediatric neurosurgery, and pediatric surgery. The hospital houses the region’s only pediatric intensive care unit, staffed by board-certified physicians specializing in pediatric critical care, and a pediatric emergency department staffed by dedicated pediatric emergency physicians.
