Memorial for the late Dr. Hanes Walton, Jr


 
 

On Friday, January 11, 2013 former students, community leaders, local political leaders and others gathered on the campus of Savannah State University for a memorial to express their love and respect for the late Dr. Hanes Walton, Jr. who died on January 8, 2013 in Michigan.

Dr. Walton was a professor of Political Science at Savannah State College (now known as Savannah State University) for a number of years. The memorial ceremony was held in front of Payne Hall, which housed Dr. Walton’s class. He influenced the lives of many leaders in Saannah and through his teachings. He was a Callaway professor.

his students and persons Dr. Walton influenced while at Savannah State were: Vanessa Kaigler (Administrator, Chatham County Board of Education), Attorney Clarence Martin, the late Attorney Howard Alls, Mr. Jamal Toure’ (local business owner), Mr. Roy Jackson (local business owner), Dr. Marion Orr (Professor at Brown University), Rev. Dr. Clarence “Teddy” Williams (Moderator, Berean Missionary Baptist Association), Mr. Tony Riley (business Executive), Mr. Terry Enoch (Coordinator, Savannah Impact) and Attorney Barbara Mobley.

His contemporaries while at Savannah State were Dr. Annette Brock, Dr. Otis Johnson, the late Col. Thomas Sears, the late Dr. isaiah Mc- Iver, Professor Johnny Campbell, and the late Dr. Henry Byers.
