S.P.A.C.E. Gallery invites the community to join us for the opening of the “Still Life and Memory” art exhibit by Melinda Borysevicz from now – August 3 at 9 West Henry Street. An reception will be held Friday July 20 from 5 pm to 7 pm.

Borysevicz grew up in Long Island, New York and spent a great deal of her time climbing trees, building forts, weeding the garden, writing poems, reading, playing the viola, drawing and painting. Although her high school teacher once told her, “you’ll always paint,” it took Borysevicz a few life changes to do what she loves best. She attended several different colleges from New York to Portugal majoring in Sociology and Philosophy before she pursued painting. Inspired by the words of the famous poet Walt Whitman, “I now 37 years old and in perfect health begin, hoping not to cease until death.” Melinda re-entered Savannah College of Art and Design where she graduated with a BFA in painting shortly before her 37th birthday while simultaneously performing her duties as a mother and a wife. “My life and my paintings have always reflected each other, sometimes quite literally and other times more subconsciously, the inspiration and images coming as a dream I want to decipher,” said Borysevicz. She said that her recent and on-going series of “Still Life” began for her as an exercise. “These “still lifes” evolved to be about the changes happening in my life and my awareness of the entangled nature of seeming opposites: birth brings death; light signifies darkness, space collides with form,” said Borysevicz.

“ I’ve recorded in the work “From Memory” offer a moving, gestural foil to the quiet, spare still life’s, and in their contrast, further explore the relationship of opposite,” said Borysevicz.

This exhibition and opening reception are free and open to the public. For more information, call 912-651-6783 or visit www.savannahga.gov/arts
