The Savannah Chatham County Public School System, Chatham County Youth Commissioner, The 100 Black Men of Savannah, and Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. are sponsoring MEGAGENESIS XI – SAVANNAH – Excel in High School: Go to College” on Saturday, February 25, 2017, at Sol C. Johnson High School from 9:00P.M.-3:10P.M.
MEGAGENESIS is a program designed to promote a college-going culture by providing college and career information to all students and parents.
MEGAGENESIS was founded in 1995 in Newport News, Virginia by Dr. Zke Zimmerman. Zimmerman began the program in Savannah on Saturday, February 24, 2007 at Sol C. Johnson High School. A survey of the audience found students from Savannah, Effingham, Vidalia, Charleston, SC, and Orangeburg, SC. There were 417 attendees of whom approximately 90 were parents and chaperons.
The program includes seven segments: a College Fair, Corporate Exhibits, Motivational Speakers, Career Workshops, Parent Workshops, College and University Exhibits, and Panel Discussions and Tips on “How to Pay for College.” A complimentary lunch will be provided for all attendants, participants, and presenters.
The motivational speaker for this event will be Semaj Clark, a native of Los Angeles, California, now a resident of Savannah. While visiting Savannah for a community safety forum a few years ago, Clark was shot and left paralyzed. But the incident did not dampen Clark’s passion for helping others or scare him away from this city he is still getting to know. He has become a well-known speaker in the Savannah area. As founder of the FIRE organization, which stands for forgiveness, introspection, respect, and education, he tries to inspire youth to avoid the same mistakes he made early in life. The program is dedicated to the empowerment of youths of all ages through the teaching of basic life skills that are necessary for success. Becoming a victim of the cycle of violence in Savannah has motivated Clark to become a catalyst to end it.
All students (Grades 5-12) (from public and private schools) and parents are invited to attend. High school seniors are encouraged to bring their transcripts. Some colleges will do on-site admission or scholarship offers. In the past ten years students have received over $6 million in scholarships through connections at MEGAGENESIS.
