Savannah Mayor Edna Jackson was among a group of 14 city leaders from across the country to meet with President Obama on Monday to share stories about what is happening in their communities and underscore the need for federal investments at the local level.

The group included members of the leadership of the National League of Cities, which met in Washington last week for its annual Congressional City Conference.

“ It was a pleasure and honor to be in his presence, Jackson said. “It afforded me an opportunity to express my concerns regarding unemployment in Savannah and economic development.”

Among other issues the mayor discussed with President Obama was the continued funding of the Community Block Grant Program, particularly in communities such as Savannah with sizable populations living in poverty, unemployment in Savannah, and she also extended an invitation to tour the Georgia port, Gulfstream, JCB and other companies.

Mayor Jackson had a one-on-one meeting with the President, during which she stressed the importance of the Savannah Harbor Deepening and its impact on local economic development. She also advocated for increased federal involvement in job creation.
