Savannah State point guard Ezinne Kalu began the 2012-13 campaign only 70 points from 1,000 career points. Kalu reached the milestone Wednesday night in a 55-70 loss to Mississippi State University in Starkville, Mississippi.

Kalu, a junior, is the first women’s basketball player in Savannah State Division I history (since 2002- 03) to reach the 1,000 career points mark. She led the team in her freshman year (2010- 11) with 401 points, and again in her sophomore year (2011-12) with 529 points. The Newark, New Jersey native entered Wednesday’s match only eight points shy of the record. She scored six of those points in the first half of the game. At the 14:50 mark of the second half, Kalu dropped a jumper from just inside the arc for her 1,000th career point.

She finished the game with 20 points, and now has a career 1,012 points. After six games in the current season, Kalu leads the team with 82 points, averaging 13.7 per game.
