Jermaya R. Patterson is the daughter of Mr. Paul & Dr. Keenya G. Mosley, Sr. Previously, graduating from Savannah Country Day School in 2015. Jermaya is a senior on the dean’s list at Hampton University in Hampton, Virginia.

At Hampton University, Jermaya serves as the Secretary of the Golden Key International Honour Society and holds membership in Sister to Sister, Student Government Women’s Caucus and the Biology Club. In addition, Jermaya is a 2015 Hampton University National Science Foundation LSAMP Summer Scholar and Inductee for the William R. Harvey Leadership Institute.

Most recently she served as a National Science Foundation LSAMP Fellow, conducted animal research and presented the findings at the School of Science 22nd Annual Research Symposium at Hampton University. In addition, she was inducted into Beta Kappa Chi National Honor Society. When not in class or studying, Maya is volunteering with the Virginia Living Museum as an Animal Care Volunteer or mentoring youth in the Hampton Roads area. She is most proud of her Early admittance into Purdue University’s College of Veterinary Medicine for her pursuit of a Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine. She will travel to Guatemala this summer for a Pre-Veterinary Internship in Wildlife to further explore her passion of working with animals. Aside from studying animals, Jermaya finds extraordinary joy in caring for her one year old Yorkie, Belle.

Jermaya’s desire at 19 years old to do more in the community has led her to launch an organization called Black Girls Do STEM (BGDS). Black Girls Do STEM (BGDS) is an organization that promotes interest among young girls in STEM subjects and careers by providing participants with opportunities for developing a connection in STEM through STEM based activities and discussions to solve real life problems.

The STEM activities are based on the National YMCA and NASA activities for youth and will occur twice a week at the West Broad Street YMCA from June 5th – July 26th. In addition, she has plans for the youth to interact with animals through a Petting Zoo as a part of BGDS activities. Maya’s passion for animals began in the 4th grade during her Science class at Savannah Country Day School where they had to care for the animals in the classroom. That year changed her life and she plans to bring that passion along with activities from other STEM fields to BGDS by way of speakers and activities. Black Girls Do STEM is open to girls of all races, religions and nationalities. Jermaya’s motto: “Stay true to your dreams and love yourself throughout your journey”.
