Shopping for food is something we all do, and choosing the right foods, that is healthy foods, can be really hard. Here are tips to add success to your next trip to the store. 1. Never go grocery shopping hungry. It’s still true, when you are hungry you make poor choices. 2. Don’t shop with children. Kids want what they see on TV, not necessarily what is good for them. 3. Shop only with a list, and stick to the list. 4. Know what foods to buy in a can. Wild caught salmon, tuna in water, and tomatoes are still good. 5. Read all package labels. Look for the words “hydrogenated” or “partially hydrogenated.” These are unhealthy, trans fatty acids you want to avoid. 6. For cereals, choose organic and pair it with a new ‘milk’. Try Rice milk, almond milk, oat milk or coconut milk, getting away from using cows milk is one of the best decisions you can make for yourself and for your children. 7. Steer clear of soy products: most in this country are derived from genetically modified crops. 8. Don’t purchase cooked food to bring home. Do not purchase frozen dinners, they are high in fat, sodium, cholesterol, preservatives and are generally very low quality foods from the start. 9. Look for and choose 100% whole grain breads, cereals, and rolls. Read the label. The longer the list of ingredients, the more artificial, harmful, and poisonous the product is. 10. Purchase fresh fruits, not juice. If you want juice start with the fruit, add filtered water, place both in the blender with a few ice cubes and blend. Enjoy the whole fruit, as a drink. This is much better for your blood sugar and your digestive system. 11. Shop for a variety of fresh fruits and veggies. Try some new fruits, make smoothies at home, great breakfast for the person on the go and for the one who doesn’t want to eat. Get veggies to stir-fry in olive oil, sauteé, or roast, and serve over pasta. Quick easy meal with a tossed together salad. 12. Do not purchase deli meats, they contain high sodium and nitrates associated with elevated risks of cancer, heart disease and stroke.

Pick up the spices your Mom and grand mom used to use, to spice up your meals and make them taste great. 14. In reading the labels look out for artificial colors,
High Fructose Corn Syrup, aspartame, NutraSweet, sucralose, or any ingredient you don’t know or recognize. Leave these products in the store. Following these tips while grocery shopping; you’ll avoid many of the bad foods and get those that you need. There are many, many healthy foods at the grocery store – all it takes is knowledge of what to look for and look out for. Arm yourself with a magnifying glass, (you know why those words are printed so small, right?), your list, and the will to save your life. If you don’t have a cookbook, get one. Look for an old one that uses real food as ingredients, maybe from a thrift store. You really can make mashed potatoes at home from real potatoes. Then, get a lunch bag, and prepare to make your food ‘easy-to-go’. Remember, Health is a Choice!
