Since April 1992, a health and nutrition advocacy group, the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM), suggests we follow a diet of primary foods for good health. Good health from both a preventive standpoint and also a healing perspective.
Primary foods being whole foods; clean, natural and un-processed. They call it the New Four Food Groups. This new food guide leans strongly on foods that heal and support body functions like no other. Eliminating foods that cause and increase inflammation, heart disease, stroke, diabetes, many types of cancer, and osteoporosis. Eliminating the causes of high cholesterol, and other degenerative diseases.
The New Four Food Groups are; (1) Whole grains – 100% whole grains provide fiber, complex carbohydrates, vitamins, and the right amount of protein. Breads, pasta, hot or cold cereal, rice, corn, as well as quinoa (2) Vegetables – Green leafy vegetables are an excellent sources of fiber, complex carbohydrates, and calcium. Broccoli, carrots, lettuce, cabbage, potatoes, and cauliflower. Vegetables are rich in vitamins and minerals. Beta carotene, found primarily in yellow and green vegetables such as carrots, broccoli, and spinach, are known to reduce the risk of cancer and other diseases. (3) Fruit – apples, bananas, peaches, pears, and oranges, and the exotic fruits, such as kiwis and star fruit. They are very rich in vitamins, great fiber and complex carbohydrates. Fruits provide valuable resistance to heart disease, cancer, and other degenerative diseases. (4) Legumes – foods such as beans, peas, lentils, soy, and tofu. These are excellent sources of fiber, complex carbohydrates, protein, and minerals. Along with providing all the necessary nutrients for good health, these Four Food Groups present no cholesterol (cholesterol only comes from animal products ), is low in fat, contain none of the bad fats, and allows one to live in amazing health. The New Four Food Groups is set forth by Neal Barnard, M. D., in his book ‘Food for Life – How the New Four Food Groups Can Save Your Life’.
