Nutrition is the key to a healthy life. It is time to get the right information about what health is, and what constitutes a healthy choice. Oh, the heat is on now. I’ve been trying not to notice, because July and August are ahead.

Summer is here and we still need to eat. During this heat wave is the perfect time to change. Change our eating habits. Quick, easy and cool is the key.

No more heavy meals, high calorie hot foods that weigh us down and slow us down. Now is the time to trim calories, weight, and fat, as we switch to lighter clothes, summer hats, and pedicures.

The easiest foods are the healthiest foods. Set your clock for the farmers’ markets and dive into the freshest of the season. Enjoy the fresh berries, melons, greens, tomatoes, zucchini, cucumbers, beets, pea pods, and all the super-nutritious, low-calorie fruits, greens and vegetables that grow in the garden this time of year.

Keep cool by preparing and cooking fish early in the day, then a green salad of all your favorite veggies. Add some nuts, raisins, bell pepper, olives and others, make your own oil and vinegar dressing to spice it up to you liking.

Have a fruit salad with your cereal in the mornings, any leftovers make for a great midnight snack. A great salad with grilled, baked or poached fish, makes a wonderful lunch and dinner. Quick and cool, and no reason to consider portion control. Wow, when you eat natural, fresh and wholesome foods, no need to worry about eating too much.

Snack on whole fresh fruits, big chunks of watermelon, cantaloupe, or hands full of grapes and berries. Make a tomato sandwich inside pita bread and drizzle with your oil and vinegar salad dressing.

Get out the blender, and make yourself the best smoothies on the block. Great anytime of the day and a great way to cool off. Start with your favorite fruits frozen: grapes, bananas, dark cherries, or berries, a small amount of apple or orange juice, pineapple, a small piece of ginger, water and ice,(always add a little something green, kale, broccoli, beet greens) and whirl. Nutrients galore and great for whatever ails you. You’ll see!

A little more adventurous? Try a chilled soup, fruity or savory. My favorite, Tomato basil soup is so easy and simple, but tastes like resort kitchen cuisine. Using that blender will give you some great ideas, so turn your kitchen into a test kitchen and see what you come up with, and share with me.

Keep some ‘good for you’ snacks around for on the go. Raisins, cherries, unsaltedunsweetened nuts, berries, pomegranate juice, water, celery sticks and carrots, banana chips, dried fruits. Just browse the produce section and pick up all your favorites.

Freezing the fruits for the smoothies is a great way to keep them from spoiling. Save your leftover veggies can be saved for soup making.

Another tip, if you do a lot of running around like I do, carry a cooler in your car, with water and what ever else you may need. The key to being healthy is smart planning. Think about your day and plan to have what you need and not fall prey to ‘I can’t help it, I’m desperate’.

By the end of the summer season, you’ll be slimmer, happier, healthier and saying, “Isn’t life Grand?” Yes it is!
