Former NFL Player Special Guest at 2013 Best of Preps Banquet

On May 21, 2013, the Savannah Morning News/ savannahnow.com is expecting a special guest for the 2013 Best of Preps banquet. Former NFL player and Pro Football Hall of Famer, Marshall Faulk will the keynote speaker for this special occasion. The annual event, presented by the Georgia Ports Authority, will be held at the Savannah International Trade and Convention Center beginning at 6:30 p.m. Tickets will go on sale April 1.

Faulk has achieved various accomplishments and won many accolades during his football career. He is a three-time All-American at San Diego State, was a third round draft pick in the 1994 NFL Draft by the Indianapolis Colts, and later played with the St. Louis Rams. In the same year, the Marshall Faulk Foundation was founded, to provide financial assistance to projects focusing primarily on sports development and education for youths in the San Diego area.

From 1999-2000, Faulk won the title Offensive Player of the Year Award three different times. He was also named NFL MVP in the latter year and twice did he have back-to-back 200-plus yard games.

After reconstructive surgery on his knee in 2005, Faulk, a seven-time Pro Bowler, ended his career. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2011 in his first year of eligibility. Faulk is the only player to amass 12,000 yards rushing and 6,000 yards receiving. He is one of only three NFL players (alongside Marcus Allen and Tiki Barber) to reach at least 10,000 rushing yards and 5,000 receiving yards.

Currently, Faulk is a pro football analyst for NFL Total Access, Thursday Night Football, and NFL Game Day Morning on the NFL Network.

The annual Best of Preps banquet honors high school athletes in various local sports. Both male and female overall athletes of the year will be named. These athletes will be chosen from among the athletes of the year in various sports selected by the Savannah Morning News/ savannahnow.com during the year. Most versatile male and female athletes and an unsung hero who contributed to high school athletics will also be named on this night.

Nominations for all categories, including male and female academic athletes of the year and most dedicated, will be taken on savannahnow.com starting in early May.
