When former Communications Explorer Post member, Chelsey Williams graduated from Savannah State University in 2014 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Mass Communications and a concentration in Public Relations and Advertising, she landed a position as the Marketing and Community Outreach Coordinator at the West Broad Street YMCA in Savannah. Chelsey, a 2010 H.V. Jenkins High School graduate, had been a member of the Communications & Marketing Explorer Post during her senior year of high school. In the spring of 2015, when she and her former Exploring Director, Barbara Foley happened to see each other at a local networking event, they set up a time to meet to discuss forming a collaboration between the West Broad Street YMCA and the Boy Scout’s outreach program for at-risk youth, Scoutreach. Through Chelsey, Barbara Foley and District Executive, Nikki Bing were introduced to the Childcare Director, Tracy Smith who helped them develop a weekly schedule of activities and field trips, led by Scoutreach leaders, Austin Eskew and Alan Dant. On July 2, 2015 the new West Broad Street YMCA Scoutreach program became part of the summer camp experience for forty-seven elementary age boys, a program that included a fishing derby, water safety lessons, building and racing sailboats and other Cub Scout activities. Scoutreach has continued this fall as part of their after-school program.
‘It was a very fortunate and timely meeting,” said Barbara Foley. “I remembered Chelsey from the Explorer Post programs as a bright and enthusiastic high school senior, and am happy to see that she has successfully transitioned into a great job that she enjoys.” Chelsey said, “Being a part of the Communications Explorer Post program gave me first-hand experience into the world of Mass Media. It played a key role in my decision to attend Savannah State University and major in Mass Communications. It’s great to be able to collaborate with the Boy Scouts, an organization that helped me gain so much in leadership and life skills through my participation in the Exploring program.”
Chelsey elaborated on her current position, “The thing I love most about working at the West Broad Street YMCA is actually seeing the difference we are making in strengthening our community. I also love the professional and life experiences I have gained thus far. The mission of the Y is to “put Christian principles into practice through programs that build a healthy spirit, mind, and body for all.” And through marketing and outreach, I truly believe I aid in seeing that mission through. We are sincerely ‘Living the Cause.’ It is my duty to help build the community’s understanding of the YMCA’s cause and impact and I love being a witness to the growth of the West Broad Street YMCA as an organization and the community it serves.”
