First City Classic…



The First City Classic is a two-day cultural festival in which musicians, restaurants, government offices, corporations, healthcare professionals, entrepreneurs and educators will welcome an estimated 70,000 visitors to showcase the best of what Savannah has to offer. The event is dedicated to presenting the tools for building strong communities and will bring together communities throughout the Coastal Empire for a variety of engaging educational opportunities and family-oriented entertainment.

The First City Classic will kick off Friday, September 12, 11 a.m. with the First City Taste, a gathering of dozens of local restaurants offering a broad selection of local cuisine, and concerts in the Park, a diverse schedule of performers including jazz, pop, gospel and R&B. The Concerts in the Park will culminate Friday evening with a performance by an internationally known surprise guest. Tickets for the First City Taste are available from several local non-profits including the local Red Cross, All Walks of Life (AWOL), A Working Woman In Need (AWWIN), CASA, the Greenbriar Children’s Center, Habitat for Humanity, Boy Scouts, Hope House, the Wesley Community Center, the Savannah Association for the Blind, the May St. YMCA and others. A portion of ticket sales will benefit each non-profit.

During the afternoon, the First City Classic will offer a Business Showcase while the Concerts in the Park continue through the evening. The Business Showcase will include dozens of exhibitors ranging from businesses to governmental agencies and non-profit organizations offering citizens and consumers a way to learn more about their community.

Included in the Business Showcase will be the Healthy Living Fair highlighting fun and easy ways to lead a healthier lifestyle such as the benefits of good nutrition and regular exercise. The Healthy Living Fair will offer free screenings for high blood pressure and several other health indicators as well as information about disease prevention.

The Business Showcase will also include the Education Celebration which will offer parents and young people an opportunity to learn more about the programs and activities offered by Chatham County Public Schools as well as several secondary and private schools. To help kick off the new school year, free school supplies will be given away along with information about mentoring opportunities, internships and other resources for teens.

In recognition of the tremendous commitment and sacrifices made by military personnel and their families, the First City Classic will host a special Tribute to our Soldiers in their honor. During the day, active service members, veterans and their immediate families will be presented with special gift bags full of tokens of appreciation from local businesses and corporations. (Active military or veteran ID required).

The second day of the First City Classic will be all about the Family Fun Festival offering up a variety of fun for young people and the young at heart. Starting at 9 AM, the First City Classic will offer up tons of top notch family entertainment including face painting, balloons, clowns, midway games, sack races and more. For visitors who remember the good old days of Saturday morning cartoons, the First City Classic will host Cartoons at the Classic, screening new and old cartoon favorites on a big screen at the park.
