Fair Housing Council Held 17th Annual Fair Housing Luncheon

On April 19th 2013, the Savannah-Chatham County Fair Housing Council held its 17th Annual Fair Housing Luncheon at the EOA Administration Building. Over 65 people attended the event which is held annually to recognize April as Fair Housing Month. This year’s event also marked the 45th Anniversary of the Fair Housing Act and the 25th Anniversary of the passage of the Fair Housing Act Amendments. The theme for this year was ‘Our Work Today defines Tomorrow.’ WTOC News Anchor Sonny Dixon served as the Master of Ceremonies. Chatham County Commission Chair Al Scott served as the featured speaker.

Three students were recognized as winners of the 2013 Fair Housing Poster Contest. The First Place winner was Orlasha Phillips, the Second Place winner was Amari Singleton, and the Third Place winner was Brianna Owens. The first place prize was an iPad mini which was generously donated by the Collegiate 100 @ Georgia Southern University. The second place prize was a $100 savings bond; and the third place prize was a $75 savings bond.

Local Attorney Chris Colson was recognized as the 2013 recipient of the William K. Broker Good Citizen Award for his support of fair housing issues. This award is named after the SCFHC Board Counsel, and is given annually to a local person who demonstrates: 1) a dedication to the efforts of furthering fair housing in the Savannah & Chatham County area; 2) a dedication to assisting individuals who are less fortunate; and 3) the willingness to continue the struggle. This year, the Chairman’s Award was presented by outgoing President Terry Tolbert to Charlie Brown for his board service on the Council.

The event was proudly supported by the City of Savannah and the U.S. Department of Housing & Urban Development.
