Joseph Ervin has quietly involved himself with a number of community efforts.
One of the most recent is the renaming of Bartow Elementary School to Otis J. Brock III Elementary. Ervin initially wrote a letter to the Superintendent of Schools Dr. Lockamy, followed by a letter to the Editor of Savannah Morning News, expressing the need to recognize Mr. Brock’s efforts. He suggested renaming Bartow Elementary School to honor him. Mr. Ervin also met with Dr. Lockamy and he invited him to speak to the members of the Board of Education to present his request to them. After two meetings with the Savannah Chatham School Board members, the Board unanimously voted to accept his proposal to rename Bartow Elementary School. Mr. Ervin did not know Mr. Brock personally, however he felt that the work he did for the community was worthy of recognition. He is the son of local educator Joan Gary.
