The Chatham County Democratic Committee (CCDC) will hold its annual “Toby” Buttimer Awards Dinner on Saturday October 5, 2013 at 7:00 PM at the Savannah Marriott Riverfront. US Congressman Elijah Cummings will serve as the keynote speaker.
Congressman Cummings represents Maryland’s 7th Congressional District, which includes Baltimore. He is a democrat and has served in Congress since 1996. He serves currently as a senior member of the Joint Economic Committee and a member of the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure, serving on both the Subcommittee on Coast Guard and Maritime Transportation and the Subcommittee on Railroads, Pipelines, and Hazardous Materials.
Cummings is also the Ranking Member of the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform (OGR).
Congressman Cummings has been seen quite frequently on national television. Most recently, he has appeared on CBS’s “Face the Nation” and on CNN and MSNBC in connection with the question of the use of military action against Syria by the US.
He also has been seen in connection with his service on the House (OGR) committee that conducted hearings involving the alleged IRS “scandal” with the Tea Party and other conservative non-profit groups.
The CCDC will be presenting awards to three outstanding citizens who are democrats. The Buttimer Award recipient is James Blackburn, Sr., the retired, long-term Savannah City Attorney (who retired after 42 years of service). The Gignilliat Award will be presented to Anna Maria Thomas, the current Mayor of Thunderbolt, Ga. The Mathews Award will be given to Joseph Steffen, who is the current Chairman of the Chatham County Board of Elections and Director of Legal and Government Relations at Savannah State University. Mayor Edna Jackson of Savannah, County Commission Chairman Al Scott and Alderwoman Mary Osborne of Savannah will serve as award presenters.
Dubose Porter, the newly elected Chairman of the Democratic Party of Georgia (DPG) and former House Minority
Leader in the Georgia House of Representatives, will make his first appearance with local democrats and will introduce Congressman Cummings. The Honorary Chairmen for the event this year are: Willie Seymore the President of International Longshoreman’s Association (ILA) Local 1414 and Mark A. Tate, the principal and founding attorney with the Tate Law Group. Dawn Baker, with WTOC News, will serve as the MC for the dinner program. State Senator Dr. Lester Jackson will host the VIP reception.
