Earl T. Shinhoster Youth Leadership Institute Honors Preservation Legacy of W.W. Law

The Earl T. Shinhoster Youth Leadership Institute will explore community leader and civil rights activist W. W. Law’s significant contributions in preserving the history of African Americans in Savannah. “Preserving History to Inspire Future Generations,” an interactive discussion and workshop, will take place at 11 a.m. Saturday, February 3 at the Ralph Mark Gilbert Civil Rights Museum, 460 Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.

Historian Vaughnette Goode-Walker will lead youth in a hands-on workshop that will allow them to experience conserving pieces of their own family’s history. Youth, and adults too, are encouraged to bring a family photograph, heirloom or memorabilia for preservation. Ms. Goode-Walker is director of the Ralph Mark Gilbert Civil Rights Museum and owner of Foot Prints of Savannah Walking Tour Company

The program is part of the Savannah Black Heritage Festival and is open everyone. Youth especially are encouraged to come.

Mr. Law’s historic preservation efforts reflected his desire to ensure that future generations of African Americans would know their history and others would know of the struggles and triumphs of the city’s Black citizens. Mr. Law has been credited with establishing The King-Tisdell Cottage, the Beach Institute African American Cultural Center, and the Ralph Mark Gilbert Civil Rights Museum. He also started the Savannah Yamacraw Branch of the Association for the Study of African-American Life and History (ASALH) and was instrumental in restoring the gravesite of the Rev. Andrew Bryan and preserving the Laurel Grove South Cemetery.

  1. I also believe that African Americans (as well as all peoples) should know the history of their origin. Since knowing their history, people will be more respectful of their traditions and proud of their people.
