Dr. Stevenson Awarded Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters Degree

Dr. Daniel Stevenson, Presiding Elder of the Savannah North District of the African Methodist Episcopal Church, was honored by Payne Theological Seminary of Wilberforce, Ohio, at its 2018 Commencement Ceremony by being awarded an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters Degree on May 11, 2018 at Ginghamsburg Church in Tipp City, Ohio. Dr. Michael Brown, President of Payne Theological Seminary wrote, “Your stellar leadership and steadfast advocacy of theological education makes you the ideal candidate for this tribute.”

A native of Savannah, Georgia, Dr. Stevenson has spent over forty years as a faithful member of the African Methodist Episcopal Church. He is a Vietnam Veteran having served in the United States Air Force. He has exemplified a life of dedicated service not only in ministry but also spiritual development of God’s people.

Dr. Stevenson earned a B. S. degree in Sociology and a M. S. degree in Social Science from Savannah State University. He earned a Master of Divinity degree from the Interdenominational Theological Center in Atlanta, Georgia. He has two earned doctorate degrees: one from the Graduate Theological Foundation in South Bend, Indiana, and from United Theological Seminary in Dayton, Ohio.

Dr. Stevenson’s work includes serving as the first full-time African American chaplain at St. Joseph’s Candler Hospital in Savannah and as a local coordinator of the Interdenominational Theological Center and United Theological Seminary to further the theological education of local ministers and lay persons pursuing degrees in the master’s and doctoral programs Dr. Stevenson’s tireless and selfless contributions to his community, the AME Church, and most notably to all of God’s people, has stretched over decades and has touched the lives of thousands of individuals. He continues to walk loyally in the will and purpose of the Lord, always ready and willing to embark upon any challenge or goal that is geared toward Kingdom building.
