Over the weekend, President Trump maligned the professional athletes who have recently shown their opposition to police brutality by taking a knee during the national anthem. In vulgar terms, Trump blamed lower football ratings on their acts of resistance and called for their immediate dismissal.
This isn’t about football; it’s about freedom. It’s about the ability of Americans to utilize their constitutional rights without punitive actions from their employers.
As I commented on Good Morning America this weekend, social activism and sports have long gone hand in hand. It’s the duty of the NAACP and all our allies in the struggle for racial equality to support professional athletes as they make this candid display of discontent with America’s justice system.
Whether you are an athlete, banker, baker, student, or CEO, it is an American right to speak out without fear of retribution.
