Connors’ Temple Annual SSU Day

On Sunday, February 12, 2017, Connor’s Temple Baptist Church will pay tribute to Savannah State University and its contributions to this community and the nation at the 10:00 A.M. Worship Service through its annual observance of SSU Day which began in 1996.

The speaker for this occasion will be Clyde A. Newton, the current President of Savannah State University National Alumni Association. Mr. Newton is a native of Savannah, a 1993 graduate of Savannah State College (now Savannah State University), and has been gainfully employed by Savannah Electric/Georgia Power for the past 35 years. He has BBA Degree in Management and is a Total Quality Leadership (TQL) graduate.

Others on the program will be Dr. Cheryl Davenport Dozier, SSU President; SSU Student Government Association President; Mister and Miss SSU, and an SSU Choir. The Connor’s Temple youth will participate on the program also.

Mr. Newton currently holds the position of Employee Development Coordinator for Georgia Power’s Plant Scherer in Juliette, GA and Coastal Generation’s five coastal plants. His professional experiences include current Chairman of the Effingham College and Career Academy Board of Directors, current Chairman of the Career Education Advisory Council for Savannah/ Chatham County Public School System, and Savannah Technical College Business Industry Advisory Committee Member. He is a 2015 graduate of Leadership Effingham and a 2008 graduate of the Georgia Academy for Economic Development (Region 12).

Mr. Newton is a Life Member of the Savannah State University National Alumni Association and has served the Association in various ways on the National and Local levels including officer positions, chairman of various committees and fundraising activities. In 2003 he was the recipient of the Presidential Citation awarded by the National Association for Equal Opportunity in Higher Education.

He is married to the former Latricia Williams and they have two adult children.

The public is cordially invited to attend and share in this Special Worship Service. The church is located at 509 West Gwinnett Street and Rev. Terrance L. Burrell, Sr. is the pastor.
