Coastal Jazz Association Presents Low-Country’s Gil “BOP” Benson


 
 

Come and enjoy complimentary world famous Byrd cookies and great jazz The Coastal Jazz Association presents Gil “BOP” Benson, Sunday, March 15th, 2015, from 5:00pm to 7:00 pm. at the Byrd Cookie Company’s B. Tillman Restaurant, 6700 Waters Avenue, Savannah. The concert is $20 for the general public, and FREE for Coastal Jazz Association members, and students with valid student IDs!.

Gil “Bop” Benson is a New Jersey native now residing in Ridgeland SC, after a long career as a jazz trumpeter, vocalist and educator. While a student at Howard University, he gigged in the D.C. area, often with the tenor saxophonist Harold Vick.

Back in New Jersey he worked throughout the New York/New Jersey area. Gil continues in the tradition of some of the great jazz singers of the past: Louis Armstrong, Billy Eckstine, Joe Williams, Frank Sinatra and Johnny Hartman, adding his own unique bebop-influenced scat-singing style to the mix. Accompanying Gil will be the trio of long-time jazz pianist and Hilton Head resident Norm Gagne, including Mitch Hennes, bass and Billy Hoffman, drums.

The Sunday Concert Series is fulfilling the mission of the Coastal Jazz Association (CJA), to keep Jazz alive in Savannah and preserve its rich history. CJA also has a mission in fundraising and providing scholarships to jazz student musicians. Its programs include the annual Savannah Jazz Festival, monthly jazz concert series, and the Savannah Jazz Hall of Fame.
