The Savannah City Council on Thursday formally recognized First Tee Savannah and one of its star young players who earlier this month represented Savannah in a national golf tournament at Pebble Beach in California.

Ryan Su, a rising junior at Calvary Day School, was one of 81 teens across the country to be selected to participate in the July 6 Nature Valley First Tee Open. He also participated in the team competition at the Core Values Cup the next day. Su’s foursome won the Cup after Su made birdie on the final hole. “I can’t put it into words what the experience was like,” Su said. “The only word I can think of is ‘incredible.’”

The City of Savannah and First Tee Savannah have been program partners for the past eight years; this year the city was one of the program funders. First Tee is a nonprofit youth development organization that teaches young people life skills and character education through the game of golf. For the past two years Su has volunteered as a Peer Assistance Coach; this summer he is a volunteer for the Healthy Greens Summer Camp.

“Ryan Su represented Savannah with pride,” said Barbara Essig, Executive Director of First Tee Savannah. “We are extremely proud of our participants golf and the impact

The First Tee plays in shaping our participants’ level of thinking, behavior and confidence on and off the golf course.”
