Chisolm Sworn in as District Attorney

Attorney Larry Chisolm has been sworn in as Chatham County’s new District Attorney. He took his oath of office in front of a large crowd at the Savannah Civic Center on Monday, January 5. Chisolm’s agenda includes speeding up the processing of cases in the justice system and reorganizing the district attorney’s office so that it is more efficient.

Chisolm served previously as University Counsel and on the leadership cabinet of Savannah State University – a university which has more than 300 employees and more than 3,000 students. In this position he provided in-house legal counsel on a wide array of issues and management decisions. Prior to that, he ran his own law practice in Savannah, after leaving the local District Attorney’s Office, where he served for 19 years as an Assistant District Attorney. He began his legal career in the office of local attorney Bonzo Reddick.

He has a history of involvement with non-profit, civic and professional organizations and committees. He serves as the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the King-Tisdell Cottage Foundation, which owns and operates the Beach Institute, the King-Tisdell Cottage and the renowned, Ulysses Davis Folk Art Collection. He has led this organization through two, million dollar capital improvement projects. He has also served on the State Disciplinary Review Panel of the State Bar of Georgia, as vice chairman, where he reviewed cases involving disciplinary infractions by lawyers from around the state of Georgia, before final action by the Georgia Supreme Court.

Chisolm was born and raised in Savannah. He attended local public schools and graduated from Windsor Forest High School. He received his bachelors and law degrees from Duke University. He is a member of Overcoming by Faith Church in Savannah.

Chisolm makes history as the first African-American to serve as Chatham County’s District Attorney.
