Chatham County Democratic Committee Award Recipients Announced

Awards will be presented at Annual Awards Dinner to be held on Saturday, November 18, 2017

The Chatham County Democratic Committee has announced the recipients of the 2017 Chatham County Democratic Awards. The 2017 honorees are: • Gwendolyn Fortson Waring – 2017 Toby Buttimer Award, for exceptional dedication to service and activism at the grassroots level. Gwendolyn has been an attorney since 1992, and supports the Ralph M. Gilbert Civil Rights Museum, Telfair Museum, Historic Savannah Foundation, and Georgia Alliance of African American Attorneys. • Sam Simpson – 2017 Joan and Tony Mathews Yellow Dog Democrat Award, for staunch loyalty to the Party and its principles. Sam served as an inspector for the Chatham County Department of Health for 34 years, and a dedicated member of the CCDC. • Ernestine Jones – 2017 Arthur Gignilliat Public Service Award, for an elected official who has effectively served the community with integrity. Ernestine was a teacher for 31 years. She has served on the Chatham County Board of Elections, Economic Opportunity Authority Policy Council, and League of Women Voters. • James Scott – 2017 Edna Branch Jackson Service Award, for demonstrating principles and practices of good leadership by living the example. James is a Savannah flooring contractor. He is a former Vice Chair of the CCDC, and past President of the Young Democrats of Chatham County. “It’s a great privilege to be able to recognize the achievements of our Members, Volunteers and Elected Officials,” said Alldrein P. Murray, Chair of the Chatham County Democratic Committee. “All year long our volunteers work to make the Chatham County Democratic Party stronger by their loyal dedication actively promoting and demonstrating the Democratic Party Principles while serving the community.

This year’s Awards Dinner Chair is Tawana Garrett, CCDC 4th Vice Chair of Fundraising. The Honorary Co-Chairs are Murem Sharpe, Vice Chair of the Board of Directors of the Georgia WIN List, and Barbara Magwood, Third Vice President of the Savannah branch NAACP. The event Co-Hosts are Comia Flynn of Flynn Style and Alicia Scott of Introspect Consulting Group.

The Keynote Speaker will be Georgia State Representative Stacey Evans, who is currently seeking the Democratic nomination for Georgia Governor. Other speakers include Otha Thornton, seeking the Democratic nomination for Georgia’s State School Superintendent, and Cindy Zeldin, seeking the Democratic nomination for Georgia’s Insurance Commissioner.

The Dinner is open to the public and will be held on Saturday, November 18, 2017 at Windsor Hall, 302 Briarcliff Circle, Savannah, GA 31419. A cocktail reception will be held at 5:00 p.m. for VIP ticket holders, and the dinner and awards ceremony will start at 6:30. Dress for the dinner is semi-formal.
