young lady was determined to work harder. She never gave up and always made time for her studies. She gets it! Without a good education, she would have no future. I am inspired by her perseverance. It is my honor to award her this scholarship,” explained Dawn Baker.
Baker awarded the scholarship during the 3rd annual “Movement in the Park Health & Wellness Fair,” a fundraiser for “The Dawning of a Miracle Scholarship.” The event included a one mile walk/run, Zumba, yoga, strength training, line dancing, games and activities for the kids, health screenings, and many other activities. It was a fun-filled day for the entire family – thanks to Fleet Feet Sports Savannah, the YMCA of Coastal Georgia, T.B. Fitness, Janet McCarthy, Savannah Power Yoga, and Abeni Cultural Arts.
“It’s always exciting to see so many people join in the celebration, especially those who haven’t ever worked out. All of us are learning what we enjoy so that we can start living more active, healthier lives. I must admit that the best part of the celebration will always be awarding the than most of us will in a lifetime, but they remain positive and never dream of giving up on their goals. I feel blessed to be able to play a small part in their journeys,” said Baker.
Baker is also excited to announce the first “Dawn’s Daughter Leadership Academy,” which will be held June 13-17, 2016 at Savannah Arts Academy. Twenty-nine ninth and tenth grade young ladies from Chatham, Liberty and Bryan County public schools have been accepted. The leadership academy will be an intense week of workshops led by some of the most influential leaders in the community. The leadership academy will continue throughout the year with quarterly sessions in September, December and April. “The students will learn skills that will help them become successful in their personal and professional lives, including – goal-setting, building self-esteem and confidence, making the right choices, anger management, conflict resolution, how deal with bullies, financial planning and much more. We are on a mission to give young ladies the skills they need in order to reach their maximum potential,” explained Baker.
