Boys & Girls Clubs Of The Coastal Empire Secure Mentoring Grant


 
 

As part of a nationwide effort to promote the importance of positive adult mentors the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Coastal Empire in Savannah, GA, www.bgcsavannah.org has been selected to receive a grant from the Office of Justice Programs (OJP) totaling $35,000.

The OJP grant for mentoring comes at a time when research confirms the importance of positive adult role models for young people facing escalating levels of negative peer pressure, coupled with the steady uptick in the number of singleparent households. “We are extremely grateful for the $35,000 grant from the Office of Justice Programs and for the Boys & Girls Clubs of America for recognizing the efforts we have made in creating a great future for every young person who walks through our doors,” said Vincent Del- Monte, executive director of the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Coastal Empire. “This grant will enable us to assist a child in unlocking their full potential beginning with care, guidance, and support. Among the full range of youth development programs available at every Clubhouse is Project Learn which emphasizes the importance of high-yield learning activities during the critical out-ofschool hours. Research has shown that journal writing, cooking classes and managing a Club snack shop helps young people understand the importance and relevance of an education, resulting in a lifelong love of learning.

The Frank Callen Boys & Girls Club, a unit of the BGCCE has a stateof the-art tech center with age-appropriate programs that teach members how to embrace technology, while staying safe online. SMART Leaders is an evidence based program for ages 14-18 that reinforces skills and knowledge and prepares young men as leaders to help their peers resist substance abuse and sexual activity.
