Beware Of Local Jury Scams

The Chatham County Sheriff’s Office wants county residents to be aware of the current increase of Jury Scams. These scams take place over the phone with the scammer telling the victim they have failed to report for jury duty and are now subject to a contempt of court fine. They will then demand the victim pay the fine via a “Pay Pal Account” or by purchasing a pre-paid card.

The Chatham County Courthouse could possibly call about a jury summons BUT WILL NEVER demand payment or ask for personal information. The Chatham County Sheriff’s Office DOES NOT CONTACT ANYONE BY PHONE directing them to put money on an account to pay a fine.

In the past, investigations have found that a number of these scams have originated from inmates in the State of Georgia prison system. Phone numbers on Caller ID cannot be traced due to being contraband in the State Prison System.

If anyone feels that they have been a victim of this scam or have any information they should contact CCSO Investigative Unit 912-652-7681. You should always be skeptical of any unsolicited telemarketing phone solicitation.
