Last Monday the Wiilliam P. Jordan American Legion Post 500 held their Annual Memorial Day Commemoration of military veterans and to those who have made the supreme sacrifice that our nation, our government and our people may remain free and democratic. The American Legion Post 500 was one of many veterans organizations that paid homage to the brave fallen on Memorial Day. The annual event is held each year at Laurel Grove Cemetery South. The area and he gravesites we honor are considered by us to be hallowed ground, especially set aside for these soldiers, other free persons of color and slaves during the mid-1800’s. The Keynote Speaker for the occasion was another defender of freedom, Lt. Col. Otha Thornton, USA retired. Lt. Col. Thornton is currently a senior operations analyst with General Dynamics at Ft. Stewart, Georgia. G. John Parker is Commander, American Legion Post 500.–
