Alpha Kappa Alpha Welcomes Nine Precious Gems

Gamma Sigma Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. welcomes nine young ladies into the Mentoring Program known as Precious Gems/Junior Debutants for 2008-2009. These young ladies, their parents, and ladies of Gamma Sigma Omega Chapter met for an orientation, Sunday, October 5, 2008 at the ConEd Resource Center. Introductions were made; information was given; questions were answered, and light refreshments were served. The Chapter members, President Emma Conyers, and Mentoring Program Chairman, Gwendolyn Harris Johnson, were impressed by the interests and talents of the young ladies with whom they will be working.

The first meeting of the mentoring process was Saturday, October 11, 2008 at the May Street YMCA. This meeting afforded the girls the opportunity to get acquainted in an informal setting.

These young ladies, biographical sketches below, have received T-Shirts with the logo Precious Gems. Their mentoring program will include personal, academic, and service enrichment activities. The culminating event will be held in June 2008 with the crowning of Miss Precious Gem at the Junior Debutante Cotillion.

Rhoda J. Bryant, daughter of Joshua and Sonya Bryant, attends West Chatham Middle School. She is a member of St. John Baptist Church. Hobbies include cheering, singing and dancing. She aspires to be a professional singer.

Jana M. Carpenter, daughter of Nikita and Florence Carpenter, attends Oglethorpe Charter School. She is a member of Temple Of Glory. Hobbies include soccer, cooking, acting, playing the flute and piano. She aspires to be an OB/GYN. Iyana M. Crawford, daughter of Ms. Renee Gresham- Crawford and Mr. Keith Crawford, attends Coastal Middle School. She is a member of Tremont Temple Baptist Church. Hobbies include singing, dancing, cheerleading and playing the saxophone. She aspires to become a pediatrician or professional dancer.

DeNasia I. DeVore, daughter of Diane DeVore, attends Notre Dame Academy. She is a member of St. John Baptist Church. Hobbies include singing, ballet, tap and jazz, shopping and talking on the phone. She also finds time to perform with her step team and praise dance. She aspires to become a teacher or a lawyer.

Jaylah D. Diggs, daughter of Retha Reynolds, attends Mercer Middle School. She is a member of Townsley Chapel A.M.E.. Hobbies include drawing and styling hair. She aspires to become a cosmetologist.

Raymoni Z. Hall, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Sylvester Knighton and Mr. Rafael Hall, attends Oglethorpe Academy. She attends Jerusalem Baptist Church. Hobbies include playing the violin, clarinet, skating and cheerleading. She aspires to become an audiologist.

Ariel S. Jones, daughter of Sheryl Jones, attends Southwest Middle School. She is a member of Overcoming by Faith. Hobbies include cheerleading, dancing, modeling, drama, tennis and debating. She aspires to become a corporate attorney. Chelsea M. Ruth, daughter of Yvette D. Ruth attends DeRenne Middle School. She is a member of Restoration/PMJ Ministries. Hobbies include singing, dancing and basketball. She aspires to become a singer. Kaelyn D. Steel, daughter of Art and Dawnique Steele attends Oglethorpe Academy. She is a member of Resurrection of Our Lord Catholic Church. Hobbies include Tennis and crafts. She is still deciding on her aspirations.
