The members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated from the state of Georgia met in Atlanta, Georgia for “AKA Day at the Capital” on February 17, 2014. This annual event is designed to educate AKA’s about civic and social issues affecting their communities and to give them an opportunity to meet with legislators. Under the theme “Global Empowerment: Moving from Discussion to Action”, AKA’s were encouraged to get involved by meeting with coalition partners and participating in voter registration and education workshops. It was emphasized that 2014 is a critical election year in Georgia where elected officials will determine issues such as: the implementation of the Affordable Care Act; authorization of government furloughs; minimum wage increase; repeal of the “Stand Your Ground” law or other actions that could potentially have a negative impact or limit resources in our communities.

In addition, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority’s South Atlantic Regional Director, Marsha Lewis Brown presented Georgia State Senator Jason Carter, District 42, the Legislator of the Year Award and Rev. Dr. C.T. Vivian with the Trailblazer Award.

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated; the oldest Greek-Lettered organization established by African American college-educated women; is an international service organization that was founded in 1908. AKA Day at the Capital is under the AKA’s International Connections Initiative C.A.R.E.S. (Collaboration, Advocacy, Registration, Education, and Stimulation). The local chapter, Gamma Sigma Omega is under the leadership of Tarangula Barnes Scott. The organization is led by its 28th International President Carolyn House Stewart of Tampa, Florida whose administration’s programmatic theme is “Global Leadership Through Timeless Service.”
